Cool Web based HTML5 App that finds Alabama Restaurant Health Scores

For fun, we made a little website called whatthehealthscore.com (please check on your phone). The idea was to use the GPS tracking on a mobile phone and have it talk to a database to return results based on where you are. We know a lot of apps do this, but we wanted to see if we could use it on a website, and not require someone to download an app.

Since there are tons of ‘where to go eat’ sites out there, we thought it would be fun to tell you where NOT to eat! So we built a simple site using data from the State of Alabama Health Department and then the phone locates the 25 places closest to your location and shows you their health code score. In Jefferson County, we actually can link to the JeffCo Department of

Health to show you why they got the score they did (germaphobes unite)!

For extra credit, we also had the website grab the GPS location that used for the lookup, and then store that data which we put into a slick ‘heat map’ from google that can show us where people used the site! Check it out at here (it is not that styled yet, and can take a bit to load, but it is really neat!).

We are very excited about how we can use this for our clients with their mobile websites… With this, we can easily let people find a location of your business near them or we can have people find out where the closest store that carries your product is located. We can even set up a special popup if they get within a certain number of feet to a specific location – If you are within 10 feet of a restaurant with a low health code score, we could show an ad for a local hospital (geo-targeted of course!)

Let us know if you would like to talk about how we can integrate this feature for you on your mobile site.
